What the Danger Looks Like

Pet suffocation can happen with a variety of common household products including snack bags! It can take just a minute for your curious pet to get into trouble so be aware of the following products and proactively keep them up and away from your pet’s curious nose and mouth!

  • Potato chip bags.

  • Bread bags.

  • Pretzel bags.

  • Cereal bags and boxes.

  • Pet treat bag liners.

  • Pet food bags.

  • Mylar-type bags.

  • Plastic bags.

  • Airtight containers.

  • Plastic jars containing treats.

87% of those surveyed did not know about the danger of pet suffocation until it happened to their pet.

How Does Pet Suffocation Happen?

Pet suffocation happens quickly when a curious dog or cat puts its head inside a bag for leftover crumbs! As the pet inhales, the bag tightens around the neck creating a vacuum-like seal cutting off the oxygen supply. The pet usually begins to panic and tries to breathe harder making the situation worse. A pet can die in less than 5 minutes from collapse and asphyxiation (or suffocation).

6 Other Tips to Prevent Pet Suffocation

  1. Store all snacks and foods into hard, resealable containers with openings smaller than your pet’s head.

  2. Serve all snacks in a bowl (not the bag).

  3. Cut all empty bags along one side and the bottom before throwing them out. Or cut into small harmless pieces.

  4. Tie empty bags into a tight knot.

  5. Keep all trash cans securely covered or behind a closet or cabinet door.

  6. Do not feed your pet people snacks!
